Today's goal: Check the subject before choosing the verb and avoid being distracted by words between subject and verb.
The boy runs.
A singular subject normally takes a singular verb in the simple present.
The boys run.
A plural subject normally takes a plural verb in the simple present.
The box of pencils is on the table.
The main subject, not a noun inside a phrase such as “of pencils,” determines the verb.
The players are ready.
The verb must agree with the real subject even when the subject comes after extra information.
